Fun Times & The Farm
We finished up with Plants and started our Farm theme. So far we learned about different crops the grow on the farm and learned about cows. We'll continue with the farm theme next week.
Our book of the week was Alistair and Kip's Great Adventure. Our amazing words were gathered, drifting, island, distant, voyage, and aboard.
In math, we completed our final assessment. We are practicing estimation, sorting, and graphing with our counting jar and learning deductive reasoning with our Surprise Box. We will be continuing our math stations until the end of the year to practice and refine all of our math skills.
Thank you so much for supporting our class during the Boosterthon event week and today during the Fun Run! The kids had a blast. Our class raised over $1,500.00 and as a school we raised over $27,000.00 in pledges. Way to go!!! An envelope was sent home with your child today. Please use this envelope to collect the pledges that your child earned. All pledges are due Wednesday, May 13th. Checks can be made out to Two Springs Elementary PTA.

Plants
We spent the week learning about the different parts of a plant and the function of each. While learning about roots, a worm stole the show. We planted a class garden and individual plants in cups to bring home. Check out our class website for pictures!
Our big book was Building Beavers. Our amazing words were lodge, paddle, lake, river, stream, and beaver.
In math, we completed our topic on graphing and probability. We'll be reviewing and taking our end-of-year test this week.
Under the Sea
We kicked off our Under the Sea theme with tasting some 'ocean water'. It was REALLY salty. We also compared how eggs float in fresh water and ocean water and discussed density. We are creating a huge classroom mural of the ocean and painting individual ocean pictures. Each day we are researching a different ocean animal and adding it to our ocean.
Our big book of the week was Building with Dad. Our amazing words were groundbreaking, waterproof, foundation, trenches, welding, and gleaming.
In math, we are working with our topic on the calendar.

Pirate Adventures
Our theme was "Pirates" We read about pirates and created a pirate ship center. We also made pirate hats, spy glasses, and treasure maps. Your favorite "K" Kid is bringing home treasure to hide. You can use their treasure map to find it...Happy Searching!
Our big book was How We Go to School. We learned that kids all over the world go to school in different ways. Our amazing words were: cable car, Metro line, trolley, vaporetto, horse and buggy, and skis.
In math, we made a book of time to wrap up our topic on time/clocks. We are now working on the calendar--seasons, months of the year, and days of the week.

Bunnies & Eggs
Have your heard about any of our 'eggs'periments this week? We bounced an egg, and we are trying to make chicken bones 'bendy'. We also did Egg Stations with our big kid buddies. Check out your child's booklet to find out more about the stations.
Our big book of the week was On The Move. We talked about maps and several different forms of transportation. Our amazing words were: llama, travel, submarine, kayak, dogsled, and double-decker bus.
In math, we continued our topic on time. After break, we'll be making a rhyming book of time.

Colors & Leprechauns
We learned about colors and light this week. We mixed colors, used a prism and light to create rainbows, and made rainbow art. We also had some problems with leprechauns. They are causing some mischief every time we leave the classroom so we tried to lure them in with Leprechaun Stew and searched for them with our leprechaun finders. Since that didn't work, we may need to build leprechaun traps next week.
Our big book of the week was Trucks Roll. Our amazing words were steering wheel, cab, trailers, haul, truckers, and headlight.
In math, we started our topic on $. We are learning to identify the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter and know the value of each. For a challenge, we are adding the value of different coins.
Seuss Week & Creativity Fair
We celebrated Nebraska State Day and Dr. Seuss' Birthday.
Rocket Science
We have turned our classroom into KASA Headquarters (Kindergarten Air & Space Association). We have a secret password every day. Tuesday, we read books about astronauts and space and brainstormed all that we would need for a rocket, mission control, and the solar system. Then we got busy creating it all. Presidents, Dental Health, and Valentines
To celebrate President's Day, we read books about presidents and studied about coins. We also learned about Dental Health by taste testing tooth paste, practicing flossing, and singing songs about brushing our teeth.

We had a quick week of learning about Groundhog Day and Valentines. We read several groundhog stories and watched an informational video about groundhogs. Mrs. Brazell traced all of our silhouettes/shadows. They are posted on our website and in the hallway. We would love to have you try and identify your favorite "K" Kid!

More Winter Learning
Our big book of the week was One Little Mouse. We practiced our number words with this story. Our amazing words were: woodland, vale, nest, comfortable, hollow, and shadows.
In math, we continued our topic on big numbers. We did several activities and found all kinds of patterns in the 100s chart. We are getting to be big number experts.
We had a little shadow fun on Friday. There were some 'aha moments' when we measured our shadows at different times of the day. We didn't expect them to change!? Ask your favorite "K" Kid about it.

We celebrated and worked hard on the 100th Day of Kindergarten!
Martin Luther King, Jr.
We celebrated the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this week. We read stories, learned a song, and created a mural with our dreams to make the world a better place.
Our big book of the week was Rooster's Off to See the World. Our amazing words were: world, trip, journey, lonely, horizon, and homesick.
In math, we wrapped up our topic on measurement. We practiced estimating capacity and mass. Next week we'll be starting our topic 'Big Numbers'.
Wonderful Winter
What a cold and quick week! We spent the first 2 days working with Jan Brett's The Mitten. We acted out the story, sewed mittens, and made characters to retell the story at home. The last 2 days, we read fiction and non-fiction books about penguins. We made Tacky penguins and painted/measured penguins.
Our story of the week was The Lion and the Mouse. We discussed the genre 'Fables". Our amazing words for the week were: jungle, nibbling, trembling, beast, snarled, and entangled.
In math we talked about measurement. We are mostly working with measuring length and height so far. We are using vocabulary words like tall, taller, tallest, short, shorter, shortest etc. We also got out a thermometer and measured the temperature. It was 70 decrees in our classroom. We could make the thermometer go up to 90 degrees if we held it in our hand, and it was 11 degrees when we put the thermometer outside!

Holidays
Our big book of the week was George Washington Visits. Our amazing words were: celebration, blacksmith, arch, sprinted, soldier, and barn.
This was our first week of Holidays. We made passports and traveled to Germany (We learned about and made German calendars and Tannenbaums--Christmas trees), Italy (We read about the Legend of Old Befana. She brings gifts to all of the children in Italy.), Holland (We learned about SinterKlaas and made wooden shoes full of treats).
In math, we are just finishing up math topic 8 on fractions and ordinals.
Food Week...Delicious!
We learned about 1 food group each day. Since there's no better way to learn about food than taste it, we cooked and ate each day. Thanks parents for donating all of the items on our shopping list! Throughout the week we learned some nutrition basics. At meals, half of our plate should be fruits and veggies and the other half should be meat/protein and bread. We should eat foods of all different colors because different colored foods have different vitamins and minerals.
Our big book of the week was Little Quack. We discussed realistic fiction compared to fantasy with fiction stories. We also talked about the problem and solution in the story.
Math was all about shapes and forms (3-D shapes). We learned about symmetry and characteristics of each shape.
Family Week
Our week was all about families. We read Tar Beach and The Quilt Story and made a class quilt of family memories. We also compared the size of our families and the number of siblings in each family with a glyph and a Unifix Cube Graph. Our families are all different and all special. Thanks to all of your who shared your kindergarten memories! The "K" Kids enjoyed hearing what you did in kindergarten.

The Human Body
Mr. Bones, Mr. Body, and Ms. Frizzle came to kindergarten to teach the "K" Kids all about the human body. We talked about the different systems and learned fun facts. Did your favorite "K" Kid ask you how many bones you had? Your biggest muscle? Your strongest muscle? We set up a doctor center in our classroom and had a great time role playing.
In reading, we read Jack and the Beanstalk and talked about realistic fiction and fantasy. Our amazing words were: beanstalk, lad, ogre, naughty, lend, and magic.
Our math topic was on 1 & 2 more and 1 & 2 fewer. We'll be taking our test on Monday. Our next topic will be on shapes.
Night Things
What do children do at night? They have Pajama Parties! We had fun in our jammies acting out "10 in the Bed" and making popcorn. We also read fiction and informational books about bats and owls.
In math we wrapped up our topic on numbers up to 10. We also did several math activities with our class pumpkin. We estimated its weight, the number of seeds inside, and if it would sink or float.

Water & Air Week
Exciting things were happening in class this week with water or air experiments daily. We learned about properties of air/gas during science. Then we used our knowledge of air (bubbles) to practice rhyming, create a class book, and create some super fun artwork!

Properties Week
We started our science unit on the "Properties of Matter". Big words for kindergartners, but we can handle them...we're super smart "K" Kids! We explored objects and found all sorts of words to describe their properties. We talked about what the objects were made of, how they felt, their shape, whether they were magnetic or not, and finally compared their mass using a balance scale. Next week, we'll continue learning about properties with the theme "Water & Air".

Fire Safety
We worked hard learning about fire safety this week. Check out the photos of our fire safety center!
Our big book of the week was "Nature Spy". It had wonderful photos of things we can find in our own yards. We even practiced being 'nature spies' at recess. Mrs. Brockhaus' wasn't thrilled when we found different kinds of bugs!?
In math, we introduced number stations. We are practicing and learning different ways to build to 5. Next week, we'll be building bigger numbers as we study our numbers to 10.

While we had a a fun fall week, we aren't sure about the fall weather that came on Friday! We learned about how plants change in the fall and what people and animals do during this season.

Monkeying Around
- For our monkey theme, we read stories and poems about "5 Little Monkeys", read and acted out "Caps for Sale" and read "Naughty Little Monkeys.
- Our focus in language arts was verbs this week.
- In math we started Topic 4 on Numbers 0-5.
Apple Week
Apple Week was Apple-rific!. We read books about apples and weighed, measured, sequenced, estimated, and patterned with apples. On Friday, we cooked with apples and had some delicious applesauce. If you want to try it at home, we added 6 apples to 1 cup of water and cooked it until soft. Then we added cinnamon and sugar (more than our parents would put in at home). It smelled wonderful and most of us loved how it tasted.
Our big book this week was "Smash-Crash". We talked about characters, setting, and story sequence.
In math, we completed topic on our Patterning. The "K" Kids are pattern experts!

Fontenelle Forest
It was a beautiful day at Fontenelle Forest for our trip. The focus of our tour was "Sensational". We learned how animals in the forest use their senses just like we do. After our tour, we got into small groups and went exploring on the trails, had a picnic lunch, explored in the play area in the basement, and played at the Forest playground. Thanks parents for helping chaperone and taking pictures. We loved having you along!
My Fabulous Five Senses
It was a fabulous week learning about our 5 Senses. We learned that we have senses to keep us safe and help us learn about the world around us. Each day we focused on 1 or 2 senses. We learned a little of the biology behind how our eyes, ears, nose, etc work. Then we put our senses to the test with different learning centers.
Our big book of the week was Mrs. Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten. We learned vocabulary about different places in the community and practiced sequencing/retelling the story.
In math, we started our topic on Patterning.
Maps & Addresses
We studied maps and practiced our addresses. We learned a song about the continents and another about the 50 states. In reading, we practiced sequencing and re-telling stories. And in math, we wrapped up our topic on Position Words.
Wonderful Watermelon
Wonderful Watermelon was our theme this week. We predicted, practiced sink/float, estimated, weighed, and ate our watermelon. In math, we worked on position words and opposites.
Nursery Rhymes
Week Number 2 was all about rhyming...especially with nursery rhymes. We read them, sang them and decorated our room with nursery rhyme art work.
Our First Week Bear Fun
Our team had a great first week, but we are all worn out! We worked hard to meet new friends and learn everyone's name. Our theme was "Bears". Check out the pictures of our week and find out what our bears did Friday afternoon!
Summer Fun
We kicked off our kindergarten experience at Two Springs with 3 weeks of summer school. Our activities centered around Eric Carle stories. We made new friends, learned songs, and became experts in the lunchroom and the playground. We're all set for kindergarten in August!
