The most challenging game was being quiet for 100 seconds! Did your favorite "K" Kid tell you about meeting "Zero the Hero" or having a crazy fun snack? Thank you to everyone for sending in 100 things for our 100 collages. We worked hard with our sixth grade buddies to put them together.

Family
It was Family Week in Kindergarten. We read about families, made a family memories quilt, graphed the size of our families, and compared how many siblings we have. We found some things are the same and some are different about our families, but they're all just right for us! Thanks to everyone who participated in the parent homework and shared kindergarten memories...and a special thanks to all who were brave enough to share pictures!
Our big book of the week was Baby Panda. Our amazing words were: weigh, health, curious, measure, bamboo, and explore. This was a non-fiction book. We have been discussing the difference between fiction, non-fiction, realistic fiction and fairy tales.
In math, we started our topic on geometry. We have been learning the names of different shapes, or polygons if you want to sound really grown up! Did your favorite "K" Kid share his/her Shape Monster with you? Shapes might seem easy, but we've been trying some challenging shape puzzles during math stations. They're really making us think!

The Human Body
We learned about how our bodies work this week. Did your favorite "K" Kid ask you how many bones are in your body? Your biggest bone? Your smallest bone? Your biggest muscle? To help us with our learning, we read nonfiction books, watched Ms. Frizzle, played with Mr. Bones and Mr. Body, and role played at the Doctor Center. We healed several of our stuffed animals!
Our big book of the week was Jack and the Beanstalk. We discussed fantasy vs. realistic fiction. Our amazing words were: beanstalk, ogre, naughty, lad, magic, and lend. We didn't have a boy line and a girl line this week. We lined up as lads and lasses.
In math, we worked with more and fewer.
Happy Halloween
Thanks parents for a great party!
Nighttime Things
Nocturnal animals and pajama parties make for a fun week. We read fiction and nonfiction books about bats and owls and made bats and owls to decorate our classroom. We sang the song "Roll Over", acted it out, and made a class book of the song. We'll be sharing it with you soon. Did your favorite "K" Kid tell you about making popcorn the kindergarten way!
Our big book of the week was A Bed for Winter. The amazing words were: nest, stump, hive, meadow, tree trunk, and den.
In math, we finished our topic on numbers 6-10, reviewed patterning, and did some pumpkin math (estimation, counting by 10's, and counting seeds--way past 100!)
Properties...Solids, Liquids, & Gases
We continued with our science topic, "Properties of Matter" We started off the week with a lesson on liquids. We found that they change shape depending on their container. We poured liquids into different containers and found that if the container is wider, the liquid wasn't as deep.--This was a big surprise to some of our "K" Kids. We also made a rainbow of liquids with different densities. Next, we learned about gases. We found that gas makes bubbles under water. We also learned that gases take up space. We could keep a paper towel dry under water if there was an air bubble. We took our learning of gases/bubbles to art and reading with bubble painting and the story Bubble Trouble. Ask your favorite "K" Kid about our Friday afternoon treat with a solid, liquid, and a gas!
Our big book of the week was Bear Snores On. Our amazing words were: sleep, cave, winter, storm, woods, and blustery
In math we continued with numbers 6-10. We'll be taking our topic test next week.

Fire Safety
We learned about Fire Safety by reading books, brainstorming, and creating our own fire safety center.
Fabulous Fall
Our theme was 'Fabulous Fall', and we definitely enjoyed the fabulous fall weather! Throughout the week, we compared the seasons, painted leaves, organized our pumpkins (#'s 1-10), and made scarecrows.
Our big book of the week was Flowers. The amazing words were: seeds, buds, bloom, fruits, stem, and petals. We discussed the book parts: table of contents, index, and glossary.

Fontenelle Forest
Check out pictures of our forest visit...
Amazing Apples
It was an 'Apple-riffic" week to be a "K" Kid! We measured, weighed, and compared apples. We used them for painting, patterning, and graphing. Finally on Friday, we got to make applesauce and eat them! We were the envy of our hallway as the delicious smell floated out of our classroom. If you want to make applesauce at home, our recipe is 6 apples to 1 cup of water. Cook until soft. Add sugar and cinnamon to taste. Thanks to everyone who donated apples for our activities!!
Our big book of the week was Dig, Dig, Digging. The amazing words from the story were: scooping, squelching, spinning, swooshing, gobbling, and rumbling.
In math, we are working with the numbers 0-5. We recognize the numbers, but many of us are very challenged by writing them correctly. It has also been fun to see all of the ways we can represent the numbers (pictures, dominoes, dice, 10 frames, tallies, and number words).

In math, we wrapped up our topic on patterning.
Maps & Addresses
Thanks to everyone who helped the "K" Kids learn their addresses! We've been singing songs about the Continents and the 50 States and learning about directions and different codes on maps. Kindergartners love maps and have lots of questions. We tried to answer them at school, but if you have atlases, maps, or a globe at home have some family fun with them. We also colored Flat Stanleys for you to mail out to friends or family far away. The envelopes and directions are in your child's homework folder. We'll be waiting to see where Stanley visits so we can learn about new places.
Our big book of the week was Mrs. Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten. Our amazing words were: fire station, bakery, library, park, post office, and chaperone.
In math, we are creating, naming, and reading patterns. Pattern is the foundation of our number system and how our world is organized. A strong background with pattern will help with problem solving now and in the future.

Our amazing words were: proud, cooperation, preparation, float, guide, and creation. In math, we worked on position words like over/under, above/below, top/middle/bottom, before/after, and left/right.
Names & Bears
We are getting really good at reading each others' names with all of our name activities...clapping our names and sorting them by syllables, graphing our names, name puzzles, and counting /sorting the letters in our names. We also read books about bears and made a class book. It will be coming home with your favorite "K" Kid soon.
